Karen Palka is a big fan of gaps. “That’s where entrepreneurs thrive,” she says. “Look for the gaps, and figure out how you can fill them.”

What happens when the gap involves half the world’s population? If you’re anything like Karen, you start brainstorming. That’s how she turned a gap she noticed 14 years ago into a thriving nonprofit that has reached over 10,000 girls globally.

A Beautiful Me started as a hobby to build up the self-esteem of my daughters and their friends, and then it took off. I left my other job to support girls’ confidence and self-worth because building socio-emotional health is so critical to being a human. I learned pretty quickly this is a global problem.”

How does A Beautiful Me fill the gap? Through teaching entrepreneurship and philanthropy to at-risk middle and high school girls.

“Business skills are real-life skills, and every girl should have the chance to learn how to manage their money and run a successful business,” Palka explains.

Her nonprofit has evolved since its launch in 2008, and now has a retail store, The Closet, where girls learn professional skills, practice managing a business, and get hands-on experience to take into the job market.

“I thrive off watching our girls grow. I want them to know they don’t have to wait until they’re eighteen to have an idea. Pitch it now in our training space. Evolve it. Make it happen.”

Inspired to know more about Karen’s mission to empower girls? She’s sharing her entrepreneur story at the Weekly Campfire.
